This is completely wrong.
As an american, you have a right to carry a pocket knife less than a specific measurement. If it was less, it's fine.
He should have told the school it was for self defense. The school should have just confiscated it and give him detention or something.

Can I like bring all of you that are stuck in bullstuff schools to my school? Its so much better and relaxed here. Oh bring a pocket knife? No problem just don't let the principal see it and your fine. If a teacher saw it they would just say put it away and don't ever get it out in his/her sight again

Edit- a few of my teachers also carry around pocket knifes to open up boxes and whatnot

Get caught with drugs? 1 year to half a semester suspended and there's even programs they have so you can catch up on the credits you missed so you can graduate.

Fights? 2 days to a week OSS

Anything else? They really don't care until it becomes a problem

It's also stupid to claim it's for self defence.
If you claim it's for self defence then you are claiming that you have it as a weapon, not a tool.
You can't bring a weapon into a school for any reason.

Courts and police don't give a stuff over the reasons you have for bringing a deadly weapon into a school. And the school shouldn't either.
