Super Mario Galaxy 2 has the cloud powerup which lets you travel insane distances from the main map, but that isn't really what you're looking for now, is it?

used to play that before it went missing.
but thats like spawning platforms

Superman 64 is your best bet, and probably is just as fun as flying in Mario 64.

Okay really stop derailing.

is it really a platformer if you can just fly everywhere

try Nimbus

it's 2D but aside from that it perfectly fits the description

Using the super mario 64 wasn't a good idea.
Take a look at Sunshine you have the hover nozzle but its not OP
it won't let you fly over the map.

Games with gimmicks like that

play tf2 with sv_gravity at 400
although in tf2 you can use a sticky jumper, which does you no self harm, to plant a bunch of bombs underneath you and detonating them, thus flying across the map. (that don't have big walls cutting off sections of it)

Why not build a map and use the glider add on?

Would platformers where the character simply has a gliding ability work? Because I know a few.

Fine with that

Spyro
Ty the Tasmanian Tiger
Sly Cooper (the 2nd and 3rd games only. (Maybe the 4th, haven't played it yet) Also, the gliding ability isn't available from the start)
Any Sonic game where Knuckles or Rouge is a playable character.
