Author Topic: Im sorry but I am getting tired of the engine limitations  (Read 3992 times)

So what? I've never even played a racing game with 20 players till I played Blockland anyways.
That's not an engine limitation. This can be fixed with mere scripts. As far as I'm aware Badspot looked into this problem.A majority of the gaming world uses raycasts, which are also available to us.It's a limit he set. If you look at MarbleMan's castle defense, that's made with only static shapes. JVS also uses static shapes. Not sure what you're even talking about here. That's an overexaggeration. We can have over 4000 datablocks and the default files barely break 1000, if even passing 300. You're obviously enabling more than just two weapon packs, and while we're on that subject, why are you enabling multiple weapon packs? Are you trying to make an incredibly imbalanced server? Any sensible server host forgets there even is a datablock limit because they only enable what they need.

And you didn't even touch up on the more important limits, like object count, packet rate, and float lengths.
This is not an engine limitation.

They're fine in my opinion.

This is a projectile/explosion setting, go complain to the add-on maker.

I'm pretty sure a higher framerate would fix that though.

There are several ways to make fast moving projectiles.

I had about 1730 static shapes on my server yesterday. What are you talking about?

This makes no sense. The reason the C4 uses the rocket launcher projectile is because the creator was lazy.

If you reach the datablock limit then you have too many add-ons.
I know you guys want to be smart about it but I mean really, at least the vehicle physics should have been fixed by now. Sure you could fix a lot with scripts, but that's no way to fix physics. If Badspot said he has a fix but he still needs to implement it, what's he waiting for? All we're getting are add-ons. Some of which, he didn't even make!

i wish the physics in blockland matched roblox's, like you can build a giant-ass ship and actually make it float and break, and if you build a skyscraper, you blow away a leg off of it and watch it collapse realisticly

can't do that in blockland

but i guess the closest thing is fakekill, but thats not exactly right

No, he says he knows the problem just needs to figure out how to fix it.

I'm more bothered by the newly hard-coded limit on how bricks can no longer be placed below a height of 0
Also the way vehicles now bug out even worse then before when going through the ground.  It used to be that if your place hit the ground and went through, you just fly back up through the ground again.
Now when a vehicle gets stuck in the ground, it is a spaztastic mess until it is respawned.

Also all the ridiculous rendering issues with semi transparent bricks

WHAT!?

Oh man, this has got to stop.

The most annoying things for me are, in order of annoyances:

  • Audio is extremely loud and ear-rapes my speakers when I am in first person
  • The 7-light limit
  • The issues with brick transparency
  • The incompatibility of shadows
  • The event schedule limit

Wait, this is actually a thing? What the forget.

I havent really had a problem with ear rape in first person but I don't keep my volume too loud. The whole thing with brick transparency and textures is handicapped..how do you release that? There is a limit for events, how large?

i believe 1,000 schedules (active event lines at any given time), but it can be extremely annoying to deal with if you're someone such as myself who has dynamic spaceship builds full of fully-functioning ship systems. turning on all of the ships lights is a pain if other things are happening event-wise around the ship. it always screws up and says "too many events! (onactivate)" and so forth

I'm not sure what causes this, but it only happens with certain sound cards.

It's not just loud, the quality gets extremely butchered by it too.

The event schedule limit
There actually is a way to bypass this, but it would be quite a bit of work.

I don't care much anymore, the reason why Blockland is where it's at is because of the things I listed (some not all). Nobody just wants to accept this fact.

I've unlocked this because I think there's still plenty of discussion to be had and your interest isn't really a requirement for it to continue. Blockland is at a certain place but it's interesting to think about where it could have been at this point in time had X been changed or Y added.

Im not really sure about this one either but I remember a while ago there was some kind of limit that explosions could not be spawned on multiplayer servers or if they can there is a very limited amount as to how many can be (is this why the C4 uses the rocket launcher projectile rather than an actual explosion?)
To shed some light on this, since nobody, including him, knows what he's talking about:
This refers to how projectiles are spawned. If you just try to do "new Explosion(){..." it won't properly be sent to remote clients. You have to do "new Projectile(){..." and create some projectile using the explosion you want, then explode it instantly. This has no effect on the end user.

The only issue listed would be vehicle physics.

Although I think there's an amount of comedic value to it. I always laugh when I see a guy fly off into the stratosphere from running into someone in speedkart. I'm sure at some point that'll be improved. It's not a big deal at this point, though, I guess.

and really i'm happy with the engine overall, even with the limitations and occasional annoyances

It's always altiris
gosh dang that altiris what a joker jesus christ
