Author Topic: What is your opinion on stealing works of art?  (Read 599 times)

Any picture/painting, such as the Mona Lisa to any more modern art that you may find in a music/indie store.

Just some thought I was pondering.

Edit: It doesn't have to be stealing the actual painting itself, printing it or photocopying it or whatever also counts.

Don't steal them because that really peeves me off

I think its pointless. Also nice avatar

I think it all depends on what is stolen, what is the reason it is stolen, what's going to be done with it after, and what the artist feels about it being taken or used somewhere without his explicit permission.

I can tell you that I personally would be thrilled to have my art show up somewhere I didn't expect it because A) All my art is hobby and free and B) That's free publicity which may lead to commissions.

That's certainly interesting, I'm more referring to someone who may solely use their art to turn a profit. I'm trying to see how much of a double standard this forum has to pirating games vs. stealing other things, given the results in the Pirating Games topic.

While I consider video games an art, I think you need to look at the author or creator of the art before considering it profit loss and such. Most actual artists are extremely poor and most video game companies, music labels, and other large organizations are decidedly not. The funds that actually go to an artist attached to a label or company are slim.

Admittedly, my brown townogy isn't perfect, but I couldn't think of a better brown townogy of the top of my head. I'm sure there are plenty out there though.

I think it all comes down to a very clear line that's defined by each individuals morals, opinions on the medium, creator, and label or lack there-of.

Very true. I have a lot less respect for say, Sony than I do Audio-Technica or Sennheiser , But that wouldn't affect my transactions with them at a lower level such as A/V cables or even some headphones. However if I were building a home stereo system I probably wouldn't buy a Sony receiver.
