I don't get why people like to discredit the popularity of Tezuni's server and CityRPG's in general, just because they aren't fans of them or the hosts.
It obviously doesn't matter if you find that the server is full of children or poorly run or badly constructed or whatnot.
Just because a few elitist people on these forums sit around and circlejerk over how much they dislike those servers doesn't change the fact that they are the most popular type of servers consistently.
They're obviously doing something right to maintain popularity for so long.
And while I can't speak for Tezuni's server in terms of how long it's been popular, CityRPG/CityRp servers have been regularly hosted and frequented by many users for years now, much to the anger of certain members on these forums.
While the servers have a consistent population, it doesn't always mean everyone's having fun.
Do you actively join CityRPs at all? I used to. You know what they're always full of? Angry people. They aren't having fun in these servers because they're broken. The people know the mod can be fun, they know that there's potential behind every CityRP. But that's the only thing bringing them onto the servers. They cling to that hope only to be constantly slapped in the face with all the stuff from the poorly done mod and badly hosted servers. They get angry all the time, unless they're the abusers themselves. Anything abusable is simply a bad game. This also applies to Jail RPs and Tic-Tac-Toe.
It's the fact that they need to be loaded with rules and administration to even be fair which makes them bad. If freekilling in a Jail RP is bad, then why is it dressed up like a last-man-standing TDM? Why should I have to sit there for an hour in order, waiting for money, just to do anything remotely nice on a CityRP when I can just jump straight to spawning items to get revenge on that guy flying around the city killing everyone? Why even bother playing Tic-Tac-Toe when I know that the first player can force a win unless the second player forces a draw? Why play a trench TDM if I can't kill the enemy just because they're building?
People do this because they think 'it's popular, and the idea sounds nice'. There have been popular servers that are actually well done. There was no administration required on these servers, and quite a few players joined them. The dueling server for example, only needed administration to accept or decline user submissions for arenas. Any TDM with an objective doesn't need any admins.
A Jail RP or a City RPG can be good, but people just have to make them good. So far, I've only seen one good City RPG and that's because weapons and crime were completely shut off. As much as I agree, taking away a feature shouldn't be a way to stop abuse, there should be other ways to prevent the abuse. I've never seen anyone take any attempts and I personally would, if I even had any remote interest in the relevant mods.
