obsidian breaks like glass.
Lies, you can only break obsidian with a diamond pickaxe

It looks like graphite. Does it write on stuff?

Left side is from the stone and right is from a normal graphite pencil. The stone comes out more of a brown color when its on paper.

Tons of mineral 'write' on stuff.
It's a standard test called a streak test and can be used to help identify minerals.

Yeah those look nothing alike

100% certain, for a fact, that is obsidian. In terms of the red hue,
a mixture of either/or iron and magnesium giving the reddish tinge.

So it's pretty much worthless?
What were you expecting? Sell a black 'gem' on ebay for 12 grand? fat chance.

No, it's not completely useless. Give the time, patience and skill of hand, you could make your own obsidian arrowhead. If all goes well, you could thread it and have a very nice necklace for yourself or someone else.

Otherwise if that's not you, toss it. Obsidian is literally found anywhere where volcanic activity of some form has occurred, and even then it can be found outside of volcanic areas.

Looks like graphite to me.

RETUUUURN THE SLAAAAAAB
OR SUFFER MY CUUUUURSE

am i really the only other person who got the reference right away

I definatly wasn't expecting a lot from it. Maybe even around just $20. I've never saw a stone like this before so I was curious.

No. That episode frightened me when I was little.

A reddish brown streaks matches neither the streak of obsidian (white) or graphite (grey, pencil)
So no, it is neither obsidian or graphite.
EDIT : Using a piece of paper (I'm assuming) instead of a streak plate shouldn't completely change the color, I can't imagine it would be anything more than a hardness factor

looks like some type of rock

Just because you acknowledged it, doesn't mean you're the only one who got it

Actually, given a red-brown streak, I'm going to change my guess to hematite

Hematite normally forms around a lot of impurities though, does it not?

Try scraping it on other minerals or something, maybe you can figure out it's hardness and use that to help identify it.
