It's not building. Well, at least not architecture.

It is art, provided that it wasn't done with a script, that is.

Agree'd this is basicly that i ment, Its building, but its not architecture.
Most of the time, Done by hand, its nice, if you try, because of this discussion im thinking of starting up a Pixel Art server again after college.

The way I see it is this:

Blockland is not able to support an infinite amount of bricks. Therefore, the ideal should be that every brick placed contributes to both form and function. I have seen lots of cool pixel art, but very rarely have I seen pixel art that is functional as well. Sometimes the reverse is true. I have seen many buildings that serve a purpose, but are very hard on the eyes. Thus, I believe that servers hosted for the purpose of building should have admins who work to ensure that every build is a balance of form and function, beauty and purpose.

I have to mention that... Pixel art requires no skills in building whatsoever. Everyone can do it without any trouble. Therefor, most pixel art is just pointless. Even when the creator is at least making something up, rather than copying a picture they have in MSPaint, it still will not impress me in any way.

We really don't need people encouraged to make pixel art in itself. What is the point? There is no need for it. You are not going to impress ANYONE by it when it's a build by itself. More than likely, it will just be seen as an annoyance.

I often see people who do pixel art in itself, as people who are resorting to it because they do not know how to make a good build. So, they are resorting to pixel art because they are desperate to try to impress somebody. Sadly, they fail to see that they are just wasting their time.

Like Trader said, it's only good when used properly (as part of a build in context). Sadly, noobs are unable to grasp this concept, and I am willing to bet I'm gonna get flamed for this post.

I agree with Trash man
The only time I have made a pixel art is using it as a graffiti wall in my build.

It's not a question of whether of pixel art is building. Obviously in a mechanical sense, you are building something. It's more a question of whether those builds are worth the space they consume.

Ah, that sounds like a tradtionionally Swedish functionalist approach to architecture. I can relate to that!

Anyway, I think Bisjac really solved this dispute in an appropriately humorous way.

Unless the medium itself (in this case bricks) add some additional meaning to the original piece, I wouldn't consider a copy of Mona Lisa art (even if done by hand).

which plays itself that my current build project should look cool and finish at under 10k bricks

No, functionalist would undermine the balance between form and function. Neither one is more important than the other.

Well, if you're talking about pixel art, you missed my point. Pixel art means nothing if it serves no functional purpose. That's why the majority of builds are things like houses, offices, stores, etc. They can be wonderfully artistic but functional as well.

As with most things in life, balance is the key.

Saying that every brick should have a functional purpose (regardless of of the balance between form and function you are speaking of) sounds a lot like functionalism to me. A building designed with the principles of functionalism in mind can be aesthetically pleasing and well decorated, but point is that there should be no decoration just for its own sake.

Wrong.

Im a good builder, Im in both USSR and MotE
And i love to do Pixel Part, I do alot of it actualy.

Pixel art can be used in alot of ways, it doesnt need to have a purpose, people could be bored and just have a go at making some, you cant say its not building because it is, you use bricks to create a canvas, then you paint it.
No matter how unskilled it is, it is still building.

Trader, Nice pixel art is worth its space.

I think you missed my point. The ONLY skill required for an ORIGINAL (and I stress ORIGINAL) pixel art in Blockland, is drawing. That's it. No skill needed in this game is required to make one (any idiot knows how to stack 1x1s or lay them across on a plate). So, it is my opinion that there should not be pixel art in this game unless it is otherwise part of some build (and even then, it better have a darn good reason for being there). The pixel art itself will not impress me in any way (only slightly if it's an original, but still not in any way in relation to Blockland).

Drawing is a skill in itself, and that skill is not required at all in Blockland, or building with legos. People can suck at drawing, and still be great lego builders. People can be bad lego builders and great at drawing. People can be great at both. People can be bad at both. Being good or bad at one does not mean a thing in the other area.

If anyone doesn't understand this, they are a noob.
