Author Topic: Cohort application and a look back [Image Heavy]  (Read 3066 times)

Hey guys,

So, as the summer is upon us, I've decided to make a post going over my larger builds from the last year. I've improved greatly this year, and I feel like my builds are finally starting to look presentable. Also in this post is my application to Cohort. I like the idea of their clan, and would love to help in their projects. To that end, my most recent build is my application, and will be presented first. Click any of the pictures to see it in full size. Feel free to rate anything, on a scale of 0-to-100. Comments of any kind are appreciated!

Build One & Cohort Application|
Amercrumby Finch

Overview
This build is incomplete, but the main building (The one I took pictures of), is my Cohort application. This build was designed to ingest the user's soul (Via lack of color), and render them incapacitated. When finished, it will feature a hot spring, individual villas, and a recreational building.

Build Three|
Disith Fleet

Overview
This build was made off a whim, and provided plenty of enjoyment. Many other spaceships were made by visitors to the server, and more than a few battles took place on it's decks. It's large rear propellers feature technology from an alien race, which grinds up microscopic meteorite, and thrusts it out the back for propulsion. It also has side jets.

Build Five|
Sentosa Cove

Overview
Sentosa Cove, although little has been built yet, is almost completed in my mind. I am very much looking forward to working on this build, as I believe the actual house is a stunning display of hypermodernism, one of my favorite architectural styles. I have grand plans for this, and will probably make a new topic for it when it's done.

Completed| No
Default Bricks Only| No
Brickcount| (Variable) 2445
Inspiration| Ocean Drive Bungalow
My Role| Everything
Purpose| Architectural study

Build Six|
Workplace

Overview
I really didn't want to include this, but did just to show my progress towards becoming a better builder. It was built thinking of one of Frank Lloyd Wright's studios. It has a restaurant on the street-level, and what is supposed to be an architectural studio on the second floor.

My Role| Everything
Purpose| RPG
Date Started| Late Autumn, 2012
Time to Completion| Unknown
Notes| I am not proud of this build.

Build Seven|
The Plan

Overview
The Plan was made to provide housing for the new residents of my city (When I hosted a city RPG). Unfortunately, I built it without a baseplate, so it was only home to one family.

General Information
Completed| Yes
Default Bricks Only| No
Brickcount| ~2,200 (I didn't build it on a baseplate. I've come a long way.)
Inspiration| Unknown
My Role| Everything
Purpose| RPG
Date Started| Late Autumn, 2012
Time to Completion| Unknown
Notes| I built this using the golden ration as much as I could.

Build Eight|
The Vivid

Overview
One of my first "higher quality" builds, The Vivid marks a new page in my Blockland history. Shifting from events (Which I had done for years) to building, I started without much of plan, and just built what I wanted in a house (My ideals have since change dramatically).

General Information
Completed| No
Default Bricks Only| No
Brickcount| ~7,000 (I am using baseplates now!)
Inspiration| Unknown
My Role| Everything
Purpose| RPG
Date Started| Autumn, 2012
Time to Completion| Unknown
Notes| I am not proud of this, either, but I was when I built it.

Build Nine|
World Build

Overview
The idea was to make a basic landscape, and then have people add-on.

General Information
Completed| N/A
Default Bricks Only| Yes (I'm pretty sure)
Brickcount| 9188
Inspiration| Badspot's Blockparty
My Role| Landscape
Purpose| Popularity (Didn't work)
Date Started| Mid-winter, 2012
Time to Completion| N/A
Notes| Nobody found the secret I made.

Pictures

Build Ten|
LSDTDM

Overview
This is perhaps my greatest build. Perhaps the greatest build in Blockland history. Perhaps, the greatest architectural creation in all of time! Then again, maybe not. I don't remember when I made this, nor how I made it. I couldn't make something like this again, even if I had to. It features RPG elements, a chest-clicking minigame, and visceral combat, complete with equestrian gunfights, and stealth weapons like a blowpipe.

General Information
Completed| Yes
Default Bricks Only| No
Brickcount| 2393
Inspiration| >Enter ambiguous drug reference here<
My Role| N/A
Purpose| Unknown
Date Started| 4
Time to Completion| Unknown
Notes| I could never do this again.

Pictures

I omitted some pictures because of the 20,000 character limit, so if you want to see all the photos, visit my SkyDrive folder.
So, that's it! Thanks for taking the time to read this, guys. If you've been on my server recently, please be sure to say "Hi"!

first build was the only one worth posting as an app
plus posting a galleria of different builds as a singular app strikes me as really weird
anyways, the first builds colorscheme is a very bland mix of whites and browns... those are like the most obvious modern colors you could have done. the architecture as a whole is pretty nice, its got some nice features, but also some bad ones that taint the rest of the build for me. some parts look like a lot of work went into them and others barely any. i wouldn't regard the other, uh, 6 builds as part of the app...

The first build is really brilliant, but as overlord quadilious said, it's having some pros and cons. I like how you did the windows and the walkways, and the tiling.

First of all. Presentation is crucial. You did a good job on the op but the way you presented the build in the pictures is quite reckless. There are too much else in the background catching the viewer's eye.

I'm very much for the simplistic and clean stuff so doing such a singular colored building is defo not a minus if you ask me. However I really dislike these "multi-brown-colored" floors. Working with prints and lines instead of colors would of been a better idea. Greyscale stair looks stuff. I like that you've used smooth ceilings. Nice skylights, especially the brickbuilt one with squares.

It's not a bad build. But the overall quality is not enough to get this application accepted. I feel like you try to make this very modern home and then you create these flashy kitsch floors who just ruins the cleanness in the build. The whole shape of the building is to me abit messy and unfitting for such a style you're pulling of. It lacks flow and flair imo. But you got potential dude. It's a no from me though.

Wehr, I think the first build was the only app.. the rest are just random builds he wanted to show off.

This struck me as how I also felt.

Thank you for your suggestions, I will keep them in mind when working on things in the future. Also, you're right, the first build is my application to Cohort, the others are just builds I felt like showing off.

Thanks again for reviewing this, and I'm sorry it doesn't meet the minimum level of quality to be accepted. I'll work to improve it, and will probably apply again in the future.

i like your style, but there's just too much here i feel like there's less focus

your sort of just churning out things in the hopes that we'll accept it due to there being... well more of it.

listen, focus on one thing, but your all into it, and i'm sure you can make it.

I understood that the first build was the app, and the other ones were just for show, and I don't mind that. I actually like that you posted them all in one topic instead of spamming down the gallery with a different thread for each individual build. It also shows your progress as a builder (assuming they are in somewhat chronological order)

About the app itself: My first impression is that I like it, but there are some flaws to it. As mentioned by others, it feels kinda all over the place. The overall shape of the house is one example. It is positive that the house doesn't look like a plain rectangle from above, but I think you overdid it a little. Those little columns everywhere make the shape look very irregular (which is usually a good thing, but here it's on the edge of being annoying). Now, I think I wouldn't even have noticed this it wasn't for the roof. The roof is all over the place (literally, of course, but also figuratively). I think the house would look better with a more even roof.

Other than that I agree with Sleven for the most part. The brown floor is overused and the greyscale stairs don't do you any favor. I like all the big windows, the skylights and how most of the rooms are large and open. That bridge is also very cool. Furniture is okay for the most part. Nothing revolutionizing, but it gets the job done.

Oh, and that spaceship looks very good as well :)

I personally like to create detailed windows with bricks than using windows bricks, its more original :3

Sylvanor, thanks for that tip!
How do you remove the seams in transparent bricks, if you you're to make your own windows?

Also, thanks King Leo and Anti-Block, I appreciate your comments.

I will not say anything...

Pretty neat overall, really the only thing I don't like is the tiling of brown, just too contrasting.

And just because Syl is Cohort and says he doesn't like window bricks as much doesn't mean you can't use them. I think they look nice with this build. Although he is generally right and most of the time building your own windows does look better...
