If I remember correctly, in the newest Animal Crossing, you're the mayor (or eventually become the mayor) and you get to build new houses and stuff.

The "debt" comes from the fact that you move in without any money to pay for your house, so you gotta work for Nook to take off some of the debt.

I only played Animal Crossing on the GameCube but pretty much you are are human and you live in a town full of "anthropomorphic animals" as the wiki says and you just do favors for them, upgrade your house and ect.
