Follow that advice about ignoring it. If it comes up again, just play it cool, act like it's no big deal, don't make it sound "special". Just say you like artwork of anthropomorphic animals and that's really all that it's about. Don't even mention research or any of that.
The thing to remember is: Some people just can't handle the truth. They'll cling to their foolish, preconceived notions no matter what. If they're so ignorant that they refuse to be impressed, maybe they're not worth impressing.
