What causes one to realize they are a furry
Fascination with animals?
Because it's fun to draw your persona as a non-human?

It started when I pretended to be a cat at age six.

More usefully, I'd say I started identifying as one when I realized playing a cat or a cat-guy as a character in a game, every time there's even the most ambiguous option for it (i.e. a helmet and black-grey hands in Blockland), is just more interesting to me, and somehow easier to connect with. I initially chose a cat because I'm pretty laid back and docile, except for when I'm suddenly not. This was also propelled around 2010 by the discovery that almost everyone I knew in Blockland was identifying as a furry, and the fact that it was some sort of taboo and there was all this turbulence about it in the community at the time. It felt mysterious and indulgent to be like yeah, my guy's a cat. Deal, yo. Except that I was almost completely secretive about it.

Take these estimated Skyrim statistics
Nord: Up to level 18
Breton: Up to level 12
Argonian: Up to level 26
Orc: Up to level 10
Khajiit: Up to level 50 or higher multiple times across 600 hours (subtracting a generous 84 for other races)

well uh
for me this happened

I always just never chose humans. if possible. I hate being an obviously human character in games where you don't have to be. like, if no skin is showing, that's ideal, but the less the better. especially if there's a helmet
for about a month or so, when I played WoW, I played as a tauren (but one time a friend I made was like "come oooooon" so I caved and played as a dark elf or something with him, but I didn't get very far at all with that character). in TES games I ALWAYS start with an argonian. that's like a rule or something. but I've played other races too. my argonian in skyrim is level 81, but I don't play with him much anymore bc he's done pretty much everything. and like you I always wore a helmet in blockland, unless someone wanted me to dress like a regular policeman or something. all that stuff

and I discovered furries when I joined Krystal's server and someone had made pixel art of furry research

i first found out that furries were a thing when there was a drama topic about them like right when i first joined the forums
and then i felt really conflicted because i thought it was a cool idea and i wanted to join the fandom but i had no desire to have love with animal people (or people in general) and i had thought that was a required thing to be a furry because yknow. the forums
eventually i started looking for information in places other than the forums and i became educated on furryness and here i am today

My friendship with a furry Blockland server host early on was a factor for pulling me into the fandom.

I originally wanted to be a wolf, then an axolotl (during the time I picked "Axolotl" as a handle); that was a very awkward choice, so I scrapped that and now I float around in a gray area of animals to pick from. I don't know how to decide on one.

i used to pretend to be a bird when i was a wee larva
and then i got friends that also happened to be furries and they were like "yo you're totally a furry just accept it"
and now here i am, being a huge furcigarette
that was the stufftiest explanation

also take this because for some reason no one posted sergals when sergals were requested

I don't know how to decide on one.
I personally just gave up and stuck to being a human.
