pretty much anything intended to be furry art is furry art
meaning pokemon, animal crossing and other stuff counts if it was the artist's target audience.

I've been noticing quite a few people categorizing furries and scalies as two completely different things

am i missing something or are people handicapped

well when people think "furry" they probably think of the anthropomorphic creatures, but branching off from that word they also assume the creature is covered in hair (furry)

if I were new to the fandom and I looked at a scalie, the first word in my head would certainly not be "furry"- they're scaly, after all

and of course the generally accepted definition of furry is anthropomorphic animals, which includes both parties. Many people don't pick that up.

so you kinda have to give them slack for thinking that way, it's just a small misconception

birds don't have fur though

so what would they be considered?

they have feathers, close enough
