its amazing how the word evolved. it probably started with the obviously masterrace mammals being drawn and fantasized about. then some evil group of dragon lovers started drawing the art too. websites and other grouping places run by just-as-evil people who accepted both species were started and of course 'furry' was tacked on there and misconceptions bred like mad. and now theres too many evilevilevil people who accept dragons etc as furries and will forever damn the furry name with their scaly torment.
