Also do you have anything to support the claim that research is the "leading theme"? Because mature+adult submissions are less than 1/4 of submissions on FA. I've been to conventions and it's a similar ratio there, with the adult stuff clearly labeled and covered, and some of it even in a sperate (and much smaller) room

you could get into the statistics of it but it will really just boil down to perspective
research is something that stands out significantly over not-research, so naturally if you tend to be in places surrounded with research, it will stick out as more prevalent than the not-research.
