that's what happened with me.
I didn't know much about it, but I hated it because I was a handicapped asshat.
now look, I love it.
and no matter how hard I try I can't leave

Most people don't necessarily want to be hateful
It's just that it's the easier option

When you see something strange, it's easier to follow along with everyone else that's saying "wow what a bunch of fukin weirdos" because checking it out and seeing what people actually do, then forming your own informed opinion, takes time and effort.

People will tell your things like "their a bunch of gay autistic perverts" "they just dress as animals and forget" etc. You could make the time and effort to get to know people, talk to them, see what they do, etc... Or your could spend no effort at all and just believe it. And the 'no effort' option is much more appealing to some people

But when a convention started in my state, I took the other option. I took the time and effort to go for a day, not knowing what to expect or if I'd like it, and I ended up having a lot of fun

I wasn't originally a furry, I just often defended them. I really thought the entire furry scene was just not my cup of tea at first, but it kinda grew on me after a while.
