Author Topic: I'm thinking of switching to Linux  (Read 4209 times)

Well, after some talking with a couple of people I have started thinking about going to Linux because Windows just isn't cutting it all too well for me due to my computers specs.

I have
512mb Ram
1.60GHz processor
75GB HD

I have already been told that I'd have to use a program such as Wine to play games and run certain programs, I have also been told that command lines are also used in the OS, I am willing to learn on how to use it.

So forums, should I go with Linux? If so what version?
I have already been told to go with Ubuntu, is that a good choice?

Xubuntu, you have the same specs as my mom, lol

If you play games on this machine and wish to keep playing them, then I recommend you don't switch to Linux or dual boot with Windows.  I say this because you will get a performance loss with Wine and it sounds like you're switching to Linux because you want your computer to run stuff faster.

Guess why Ubuntu is free

Because it's stuff

Windows XP eats my ram real bad and I get constant lockups. If Linux isn't a good switch I can always reinstall windows XP.

How about you tell me why its stuff instead of just showing up and going "its stuff"

All the linux distros are free
Ubuntu is for casuals.
Debian is loving great thanks pacha for helping me install it last night c:

Go figure out yourself.

Ubuntu may be one of the worst distros out there, but it's not stuff because it's free, or vice versa. I could only list three gripes I have with it.

Windows XP itself doesn't eat up memory, it's the bullstuff that you have to install for it. Your problem may not reside with the OS, but more so trying to use a modern browser with less than 1GB of RAM.

Go figure out yourself.

but i already know why it's not stuff to me. why is it stuff to you? i actually want to hear why. i won't judge

Hm, you are the second person to say that Debian is great, I"ll take a look into that.

Also after talking to other people outside the forums they have told me that Linux is pretty good for my situation. Aside from gaming that is.
Keep in mind, my PC doesn't have much ram, I am going for overall performance.

Go figure out yourself.
Gee, you're helpful.

This PC was designed for Windows XP, of course looking it up and such it appears that someone took one of the RAM sticks.
