Author Topic: I'm thinking of switching to Linux  (Read 4239 times)

His computer specs are low, so he obviously needs something less hardware intensive. I never told him a distro was better or worse, and I don't see anyone here stuffting on other distros. Recommending him things to look for in a distro for his current situation is what he needs.
It wasn't directed at you or anyone in particular, it was just a "blanket direction", if you will.

Alright, I have already chosen to go with linux/linux duel boot. I have Ubuntu on my flash drive ready to be installed as soon as I have everything backed up and such.

Of course now I have to choose, dual boot or straight up Linux?

Dual boot. You'll regret overwriting Windows, even if you think you have everything backed up/moved out.

75GB HD
Even a very small partition for windows will be eating up most of his storage.

I seen that edit.
And why would I? I have horrid hardware and Windows + its required components are eating at my resources like crazy.

I've been talking to someone who took and dual booted a HD with Linux and Windows XP. Same XP I have now.
And he has a 75gb HD

I've been running Linux on a 6GB partition for months now, it's completely manageable so long as you clear the package manager's cache after you install things.

Actually, you should partition. You will want to go back to windows eventually.

I know that I will be going back to Windows. I already plan on how I'm going to use it.

Windows: Gaming and video making using said games
Linux: Video editing, working with codes, working with images, ect stuff like that.

I'll be moving certain programs off my Windows over to the linux rather than reinstalling them taking up more space.

This; some programs just outright refuse to work well on linux. Plus, most linux distros don't really take up that much space, even Ubuntu.

As I said, I'm going to be using both.
It'll require quite a bit of restarting and such but at least I can get stuff done without my computer locking up.

yeah, you did a GREAT job of helping me install arch to my moms computer
shhhhh it was 3:00 AM I couldn't see straight

we need to get a linux megathread going
seeing the topic pop up more on here lately

I thought we had one already?

Backing stuff up to a external HDD in the event of a partition failure/any other issue that can cause a harddrive to be wiped.

Any other precautions to take?
