Author Topic: I'm thinking of switching to Linux  (Read 4213 times)

Backing stuff up to a external HDD in the event of a partition failure/any other issue that can cause a harddrive to be wiped.

Any other precautions to take?

make a system restore disc?
incase your pc forgets up drastically, where it doesn't get pass the BIOS stage, you should make a system restore disc

when it doesnt get past the bios stage you have bigger things to worry about then your OS

I backed stuff up to my external HDD
10gb backed up, looking through my PC like 3 times turns out that is all I have. I have 20gb still taken up though in the files that are installed.

I have 50gb open (48gb) on my HDD now, I can use 30 of that for linux and keep 10 open just to stay open.
I honestly don't think that I'll be using 30gb for linux either, I only used 10gb worth of files for Windows, 20gb was just some application data stuff along with some other installation files.

Were you seriously going to use that?

What do you mean by "BIOS stage?" If your computer didn't complete (or attempt to run) a POST, it's broken and you should get a new one.

I think he meant that it stops during the POST test with an error or something. Such as a "No OS found" error.

That would be a problem with the boot loader, not the BIOS.
Also, a heads up, but POST means Power On Self Test, making "POST test" grammatically incorrect.

I know what a POST is, I made a grammatical error that I didn't catch.

Guess why Ubuntu is free

Because it's stuff
Go figure out yourself.
lol.

i'm astounded vincent even speaks to you in the first place.

Welp, I'm about to partition my drive so I can dual boot. I already have everything backed up and ready to go. 30gb will be left to the side for Linux however.

I need to reinstall Windows either way because my computer is being real slow again and giving me issues

I'd like to switch just to look like i know what i'm doing, but truth be told, I don't. Also, I cannot wrap my head around all the stuff you need to do for linux to make it work  as a replacement to a PC.

OP, I wouldn't go there unless you know what you're doing or have the capacity to.

He's using Ubuntu, there's so much handholding and support it's almost impossible to do something wrong.

No, don't, linux sucks, keep windows
