Author Topic: Video Game Music: Good enough to sell?  (Read 713 times)

So, I just made some chiptune-like video game background music, just for kicks, but I realized that it could be an opportunity to make some dough. The question is, is this good enough to sell as background music for a, I dunno, side scrolling game or something?

When I say sell, I mean in the Unity Asset Store, not to an individual.

Here's the link to the song: http://www.audiotool.com/track/bits_pieces-6YptZ/

Whadda y'all think?

I guess it's okay, though I'm more a fan of NES/FC/GB chiptune-y stuff I guess

I didn't exactly listen to it, it's kind of repetetive, so I skipped a few seconds sometimes
The whole song sounds kind of like it's the beginning

It's supposed to be repetitive. Background music is either very mild, has few instruments, or is very repetitive. This is to keep the player focused on the music a little, but not so much that it takes their mind off the game. Also, the song is a loop.

Thanks for the feedback, but please, people, if you're going to comment/criticize a song, at least take the time to listen to the whole thing. Otherwise you might end up making false claims.

(just relistened)

I don't think that it has to use few instruments or be very repetitive. I mean, I guess all music has an element of repetitiveness to it, though.
I think it just especially bugs me in this because nothing much changes. The drums vary a bit and there's an extra instrument added later, I think.

arrgh I feel like I'm not explaining this right but I don't know how to

I see what you're getting at, but in this case, since it's a loop, if it varies to much, it will no longer sound good as a loop.

You could make it vary in the middle so that at the end it can loop into the beginning

Thank you for your wise words.

Anyway... I think I'm just gonna see what happens. The real test will be whether or not it gets past the Asset Store mods. And if it never sells, I can always change the price to free.
