The 4th amendment says they can't do that.

If you let them it is a different story, but if you don't they're violating the constitution.

Also the government hasn't been the most law abiding institution in the world.

Why should we trust a government whose only concern is to maintain their power? Go live in the UK if you want 24/7 surveillance. The US was not built on the intentions of keeping us safe from terrorists, it was built on preserving our rights and freedom. It's the small things like the Patriot Act, NDAA, CISPA, that make us closer to a police state. Think the US Government can do no wrong? Tell that to the Native American, interned Japanese, Palestine, and the victims of drone strikes.

but imagine if the gov't really did tell us everything
i mean we're not feeling the effects of being spied on right now or any of "Emperor Obama" and his supposed dictatorial actions.
i think it's better this way.
but when it really actually starts to have an actual effect should discussions like these come up.

hell i think exorbitant traffic violation tickets are really more of a realistic problem.
