Author Topic: Re: Linux Megathread - PurpleMetro distro switch count: we lost track  (Read 34460 times)

So about two days ago I decided to get off my lazy ass and get Linux, so I got Ubuntu, installed it, and ran it with no problems. And all I wan't to know is: how the forget do I install openoffice? I know Ubuntu comes with its own office program "Libreoffice" and its fine but I still prefer openoffice over it. Had no problems getting it just went to their site and it automatically got the linux version for me, so no problems there. But since I've had Ubuntu for just over two days I know jack stuff about it, so all I want to know is how do I install openoffice 3.4.1 for Ubuntu 13.04?

And you know. . . any thing else I need to know about Ubuntu.

You might be able to find it in the Ubuntu Software Center, or on OpenOffice's website.

I have it downloaded, but the download is a .tar.gz file which all I can surmise from it is that its an archive file of some sort.

Wait, I found this set of terminal commands on askubuntu:
Code: [Select]
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:upubuntu-com/openoffice
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install apache-openoffice

Run them and you should be good.

Thank you very much, that seemed to work

. . . ah how do I run it?

Assuming you installed it either go to the new icon under installed apps or type openoffice into terminal

Ok, so I have a problem. I'd consider myself an intermediate Linux user by now, as I have installed Arch singlehandedly from ground up multiple times, and now have a functional platform with a GUI environment. However, I'm slightly stuck. I'm using Compiz as my WM, but two problems: first off, when I try to use emerald as my window decorator, there are no navigation buttons or anything; it's just a blank border. Is there anyway to fix this, without using a different decorator?

Second problem is: I can drag, drop, or add files to my desktop (still using Compiz). Is there a fix here as well? I can post my ~./xinitrc file later, if if would help. I'm trying to avoid switching to Openbox or, even worse, a heavy desktop environment (cause I wanna keep my pretty Compiz effects, but my comp can't handle a heavy environment). With that being said, is there any other lightweight environment out there that works well with Compiz? Does Openbox? If it does, I could just use that...

Try out XFCE or Openbox. If you get Openbox with a nice panel its actually quite nice

Yeah, I like Openbox, it's just that I haven't been able to use it with Compiz successfully. I might look into XFCE, though. I've heard about it, but I haven't tried it. My panel is pretty lacking ATM, it's just plain old tint2 svn; any suggestions for a lightweight, functional panel (preferably customizable)?

I've noticed cairo-compmgr has become rather stable recently, can't remember if I got the git version or the plain one though. You could try that instead of Compiz.
compton-git is also decent if you don't mind only having a fade animation.

lxpanel
xfce4-panel
tint2

I'm installing Ubuntu from a CD and I used Arch Linux before and when I booted into the ubuntu CD it brought me to the screen where the Ubuntu logo and the dots are but I let it sit there and load for a while and nothing has really been happening so help please
since you won't help me on my own topic, hopefully you will help me on here -.-

i like how nobody loving helped me when it was the first post on the 4th page

I just installed linux mint and grub wont show up, I have no idea why, i tried this with debian and it did the same thing, all it does is, boot directly into windows and not show any boot options or anything, any advice? I think it might be something to do with my bios
can I get help already

Could be a UEFI thing?
If your computer isn't that recent I'd suggest using ~~google~~ and see if it shows anything.

I just built this computer a week ago, I think it has something to do with the clickbios thing MSI has
The motherboard is the MSI 970A-G46
EDIT: It does, I can acsess it from windows, how can I disable it/ Bypass it

You may hust have to use another distro or wait for a Mint update.
Ubuntu supports UEFI the last time I checked, and I'm 105% sure there's a cinnamon PPA somewhere. Try that and install Cinnamon.
Mint is also Ubuntu based so
