Mint (MATE) or Debian.
I went back to try Ubuntu and I only lasted probably 4 hours before I got sick of every issue that came up. I also had 1,655 packages installed before i removed about 700 unneeded ones.
Cooling fans were going nuts, Compiz wasn't working very well until I installed Unity, and it went to stuff again after I removed it, and a bunch of other crap; slow as hell too.
Was also locked out of the root account, no idea why.

so get Mint or Debian, do not deal with Ubuntu if you at least have some idea with what you're doing. Debian's installer is literally the same as Ubuntu's Minimal installer. It's CLI but it's quite user-friendly.

I tried installing debian but the grub menu wasnt showing up for some reason, I want a dekstop that will look nice and function well

i originally updated it after i increased the size of my music partition and before i had windows check the partition.
assuming it removed or corrupted some files.

i guess this a good thread to say that I got a 2005 Dell Inspiron 6000 running on Lucid Puppy Linux. Even at this OS, and 256GB of RAM Seamonkey still crashes when loading multiple gifs. It runs fine though without the wireless mouse connected.

if you're willing to forget around with the installation for a bit, try out archbang. system requirements are 64mb of RAM

ill try archbang when I get more used to how Linux operates and works. I only started using Linux since a few days ago when I was tasked with fixing this laptop and I still hardly understand how package downloading works. The worse part is that I can't find good beginner guides for Puppy Linux so im basically on my own unless I go on the support irc which is mostly just people idling on there for no reason. either that or i cant see anyone talking for some reason or another. and while typing this i realized how nice this keyboard functions, it reminds me of how nice the thinkpad keyboards are.

IRC is basically a last resort for help because all anyone does on there is idle or small talk. if you have questions about puppy linux i (or someone else) could probably help you with a couple of things even though I don't have a ton of experience with puppy

How do I remove a partition? I have Xubuntu installed but I want to try Debian or Mint.

Also is there a way I can install them from Xubuntu? Flash drives don't work on this old laptop but CD's do so I don't have much space...

Get gparted or fsdisk (I think), and type either "gparted --help", or "fsdisk --help". I'd tell you if I remembered off the top of my head, but I have partitioned in a while... :/

Tip: Use "lsblk" to check disk info.

You could make a bootable partition with plop on it to boot from USB.
