Also, the taskbar on top still annoys me. That can probably be changed, though.

I thought the dock worked as the taskbar as it does in OSX.

Ah, x86-64 is actually amd64. You probably downloaded the 64-bit version instead of the 32-bit one.

Just use the 32 bit version for a VM (also make sure to enable PAE, that also happened to me).

YES.  I LOVE that Elementary runs the Ubuntu 12.04 kernel, thus my Ethernet port doesn't loving work out of the box because apparently long term support versions don't get hardware updates that newer versions have.  Who the forget decided that using different version of the kernel for Ubuntu would be productive, and why hasn't anyone bothered upgrading Elementary to a new kernel version?
