You should add Manjaro as a derivative of Arch.

You also need to seperate the other distros from "Variants of ubuntu" it looks like you marked OpenSUSE, Fedora etc as variants of ubuntu when they arent. If you put Xubuntu you might as well also add Lubuntu and Kubuntu. Also, this is my second edit, you really suck at creating descriptions for distors, As for the description of linux itself, its not an OS. Linux is just the kernel and then there are free operting systems that use it as a base known as GNU/Linux.

STOP WITH YOUR CONSTANT OS SWITCHING

please

Why don't you add desktop versions to op, like cinnamon and gnome?

ok jeez calm down

Well, it looks like I'm gonna have to let my mom use my #! laptop...my dad is taking their shared laptop on a business trip.

Crunchbang is probably gonna be too hard for her to understand, so I was thinking either Mint or Puppy Linux...

Any other suggestions? This laptop is a piece of crap so it's gonna have to be pretty light-weight, and she's a windows user so something that 'feels' like windows would probably be good as well. Windows is way too slow on it to be useful.

I guess I should also point out that all she will be doing is checking her email and basic web browsing.

Porteus Linux or aLinux maybe

that's actually not a bad idea

I'll probably work on that later today

so does anyone here recommend/like vim at all?

i'm thinking about using it with screen but screen is like, really hard to use
and i don't want to have multiple consoles up editing code with vim, it's too much sorry

so yeah i'm kind of being dragged away from the possibility of using vim for every-day use
halp

vim is by far the most efficient text editor once you learn how to use it properly, I use it for 8+ hours all day every day for development.
