Author Topic: league of legends is now officially recognized by the US government as a sport  (Read 10338 times)

this probably lets loose the floodgates for other esports to gain "we're a real sport guys i'm serious" status

wii sports will rise from the ashes i swear!

"Ha! Guess what, Mom?! I'm a pro athlete!!!!"

"you haven't moved in 3 days me and your father are starting to worry"

the joke is that i do play a game professionally
everybody involved came screaming to me about this going "KISH WE CAN BE ATHLETES NOW"
goddamn

It's only a big deal because it's in America, SC2 already had TV channels and stuff dedicated to it in Korea, as well as being considered the national passtime/sport thing. I think it's better news that America was handicapped enough to throw a kid in jail over something he said ironically in League.
that's because korea is a third world country compared to the U.S.
They're tapping things more than you are.

That's right.

when you got loads-e-mone you tap whatever you want

look at those pusillanimous individual killers

pizza is a vegetable and videogames are sports

welcome to teh usa

Yet video games are being treated as an abnormality.

You can't really call yourself an Athlete by playing an e-sport, since it's not Athletics.

You're a sportsman, sure.

I don't really see any problem with this.

Calling LoL a sport doesn't exactly make other things, like Basketball or Running any less of a sport.

And at the very least, it allows you to be properly identified as a professional player, being someone who is sponsored or plays the game as part of a vocation.

And the US Visa system is quite bizarre at times.
My brother is currently teaching Kayaking at an American Summer Camp, and he had to jump through an unbelievable number of hoops to get his Visa, which I think is weirdly specific to the reason for his visit.
If this speeds it up for internationals wanting to enter tournaments in the US, then it's only good.
I've no doubt that those sort of tournaments do bring in some decent amount of money to the country/state they're in.

super late
More directed towards the bailout which was literally yesterday being 5x what a murderer requires, over video game comments, but I get your point.

Also Dota 2 professionals > League professionals, though even they had visa problems last year, so hopefully the same deal can happen with all the Chinese teams for TI3.
