Author Topic: I need help with a computer build  (Read 2177 times)

So, its only about half-way done, with most the expensive stuff out of the way, but i need you guys to fill in the rest because idk what else to chose to go with this.

The total cost should go around 1200 and i don't need a monitor or keyboard etc. just the actual computer.

oh my god that is a lovey computer

Well I won't call myself an expert, but that cpu of yours seems very overpriced for what it is.

Compare it to this AMD processor:

8 cores
4.0 GHz w/ turbo up to 4.2
more cached memory
significantly cheaper

Edit: or if you don't want 8 cores of awesome, the 4 core version is only $130

Also, do you require the 2 tb of hard drive space? Caviar blues and blacks in 1 tb varieties are cheaper, but offer some performance increase in terms of loading times and certain games. Also, for the money you are spending on ram, you could get 8 gb instead that is clocked higher and has a lower CAS latency.

This ram is around the same price. 6gb and 8gb won't have a huge impact on gaming performance, but down the road and for the sake of a ram that performs better, it might be worth it.

Sorry to break the news to you but an i7-3770k will out perform all of those. 8 cores doesn't mean jack stuff anymore in the world of CPU.
You can get those CPU's if you are under a strict budget, but if you have the money, don't even bother.

I don't know if OP should add anything else, maybe a good CPU fan if he plans to overclock anytime soon.

Wait stuff he has no motherboard lol.

Maybe go for this;
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-motherboard-b75ag43
Crossfire support if you later plan to get another GPU
Same socket as i7-3770k
Up to 1600MHz for RAM, so that means you can upgrade your RAM modules now from 1333MHz to 1600MHz.

intel doesnt respect your freedom

Well I would certainly hope so for the price they are charging.
Problem is that the clock speed is also significantly faster and cache memory is greater on either of the AMD ones.
What should I be looking otherwise?

Actual performance tests, benchmarks and things like that. i7-3770k dominates the AMD FX 8350 and the other CPUs part of the series. You could even downgrade to an i5-3570k and beat the 8-core AMD. Not being an intel fanboy but it's just how it is.

intel outperforms amd consistently.  only go for amd if you're actually on a serious budget.

i made changes to the parts list, specifically adding a mobo, 8GB of RAM and a GTX 670.  also added a dvd drive for your copy of windows 8.
total comes to roughly $1215 after the rebates + instant savings so be sure to cash in on those.

I can agree with the changes done here.

That looks pretty good, is there anything i could downgrade on with minimal effects

You can go down to an i5-3570k if you want to. Still one of the very top CPU's.

Noone is going to point out the fact he has an open case 5400 RPM hard drive as his only storage device?  Really?

You all realize after he fills that thing half way and day to day usage kicks in, that thing is going to take 4 hours to search the entire C:/ index

Swap it out for a lower storage 7200 RPM hdd or get an SSD to run Windows and other important programs on, alongside the HDD

Also so i don't need a cooler? im not overclocking at the moment so i don't know if i need a k series or not
