For some reason they do, or atleast a few people

people hate this game?
There were those who found the game to be disappointing. Although I absolutely loved it, I can see where they're coming from.

The big reason: For a setting as unique and creative as Skyloft, the developers were exactly the opposite. When you first leapt from Skyloft and were free to explore the fragmented world above the clouds, you may have realized that you can't do that. The Sky is empty; it's nothing but an oversized hub. There is next to nothing to do. It's beautiful, awe-inspiring, and boring. You almost never do anything but fly from Point A to Point B. Compare it to Hyrule Field in Twilight Princess. Hyrule Field was much larger with numerous areas to explore, more intriguing with secrets scattered all over the place, and more engaging with a variety of enemies to fight. Not to mention that it didn't just connect the various environments, but fit them together. Skyward Sword literally just drops you from the hub to an overworld. Hyrule Field feels real, and as you traverse it the environment slowly changes. If you go into the forest it slowly gets thicker, if you head into the mountains it slowly gets colder, etc. Not to mention the ingenious placing of Hyrule Castle on the horizon; mysterious and waiting for you to liberate it; it's beckoning to you for the entire game.

I digress. Point is: the world is, for the most part, empty. Not just the Sky, but the rest of the overworlds as well.

And think about this: why did they not keep the floating-island gimmick when developing the other environments? Think of how cool it would have been. The volcano, the forest, everything. It would have been so cool.

Other reasons:

  • Do you remember any tune from the game other then Ballad of the Goddess? Neither do I. The soundtrack was beautiful but easily forgettable.
  • Motion controls were imperfect and forced.
  • "DOWSE, DOWSE, DOWSE, DOWSE."
  • Repetitive boss fights; though for the most part the bosses were really cool and fighting them was really fun, fighting the Imprisoned got old fast and fighting Scervo a second time was stupid, but I think it did Ghirahim justice. The second battle could have been cut out though - using him again when they did was just laziness on the developer's end.
  • There were quite a bit of fetch quests
  • The "OoT is not overrated and is the best Zelda game ever, no exceptions. Except maybe Wind Waker. And A Link to the Past. And-" attitude.
  • We're starting to kick the dead horse. It's a great formula but it needs to be mixed up a little bit. The possibilities are endless: we could play as Zelda, or it could even be post-apocalyptic. Skyward Sword was the same "save the damsel in distress, acquire the Triforce, and save the world" story. Though it was told better (Link didn't do everything, Zelda, Impa, and Groose really contributed and developed well, especially Groose), and arguably fresh, being the first title chronologically and whatnot.
  • I've even heard people complain about revisiting the same locations and reusing the same items. I don't quite understand why they were complaining about it. It was executed really well; you were always wondering where you'd visit next and how you'd get there, and were using the tools in new, creative ways to continue.
