i've known two deaf folks, both of whom were perfectly capable of writing in totally coherent english (and spanish in one's case) while being teenagers, and i know at least one was deaf from birth

Thirty years ago deaf people didn't have the help they do now so it was probably harder for him to learn English. He probably also has some learning disability or something

Yeah. There's a noticable logic behind Furling's grammar, and he types it pretty damn fast, indicating that is how he normally types/communicates.

I did meet a deaf person IRL and American sign language does not translate well, so...
