Author Topic: How do you pronounce .gif?  (Read 8557 times)

I don't care whether or not the person who came up with the word says it is pronounced jif, I say gif because it doesn't sound handicapped.

jif and gif are both correct pronunciations. i pronounce it as gif.

pretty much this

I was too lazy to read the last 2 pages, but someone actually did an article about the pronunciation.

Oheylook, NYTimes: http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/05/23/battle-over-gif-pronunciation-erupts/?_r=0

Inventor claims it is pronounced "jif", and I dunno about you guys, but I think the guy that made it knows how to pronounce it.

The problem is nobody cares what he says.
That's how it should be. I like jif I say jif, gif-t is fine too, honestly why does anyone even give a forget what others think is right?

I want to invent something and give it a simple name like, Lug, but you have to pronounce it "Artebuckmagoeuobis"

Gypsy (substitute for letter I)
Gym (substitute for letter I)
Ginger
Gin
Gist

*-ological
*-gic
*-gist
Digit
Engine
Fungi
Legible
Fugitive
Religion

2 romance languages share the pronunciation between e/i and a/o/u. English generally makes "g" soft with ge/gi/gy.

There are many reasons for those exceptions. Some words of origin, since the "g" is always hard, never got their spellings changed when French and Latin stems were introduced to English.
I removed everything that didn't make that "ih" sound after the g (including the ones where you were just being a smartass), since they didn't apply. also, notably, my list only included words that started in "gi," so none of the examples had it in the middle (so your similar list actually looks a lot more like a list of exceptions than mine)

I also highlighted "fungi" because it's just as often, or more so, pronounced "fun-guy"

anyway, since pronunciation depends on the language of origin, and .gif doesn't have one of those, there is no "right" way to pronounce it

Gif

anyone who pronounces it jiff is cancer.

actually, anyone who cares is "cancer"
also, anyone who uses the word "cancer" like that, is "cancer"

"gif" means "poison" in dutch

and you pronounce it like "chhhif"

or idk how to write it actually

i say gif in my head but jif in real life to sound correct and smart. hmm hmm

Anyone arguing about the pronunciation from the point of English language rules is a foo'. The first rule of English is that there are no rules. There are only exceptions.

The creator says it's JIF and that's fine by me. Anyone who says JIF is fine by me. I still know what they mean.

I pronounce it GIF because I'm Finnish and that's how we roll. Some other things that lead me to the hard G pronunciation:
GIF = graphics interchange format. Graphics is said with a hard G.
The file format known as "JPEG Interchange Format" (JIF) is specified in Annex B of the standard. .JIF format already exists. Pronouncing GIF with a soft G could in some rare cases cause confusion between .GIF and .JIF formats. Although nobody uses .JIF any more/ever but I swear I've seen at least four .JIF files in the past ten years!
