Here are some of my ideas.
I think that reporting crimes should go like this:
When someone witnesses a crime, they can go to a police station and report it or they can call 911 (assuming there will be cellphones you can buy). Both will bring up a box. This box will have drop down boxes to enter information. You would be able to:
>Select the crime you witnessed
>Select the player(s) you think committed the crime (yes you can do more than one)
>Select the victim(s)
>Select "Show Who Reported" or "Remain Anonymous"
Each selection will determine the priority of the case compared to other cases. For example: if you select "Murder" and a player of high reputation/rich as the victim, the criminal will be jailed longer. This means that if someone with a high social status or high reputation is murdered, you will get more demerits and more time in jail. This would most likely be determined by: money + reputation + job (if you kill the mayor, you are more wanted).
The selection of suspected criminals and victims will be optional because you may not know who did it or who was killed. This would simply mean that in the report it would say that it has yet to be determined who committed the crime or who the victim is. Once more evidence is discovered, such as who the victim was or clues leading to a certain player as being the criminal, those bits of information will be automatically added into the report. This means that reports will be updated as more evidence is discovered. If no evidence is found for a case with little information, the case will eventually go cold (it will no longer be shown on the police brick). When new evidence is entered for that crime report, the timer is reset. If a report already has good information about who committed the crime, it will not go cold for a much longer time (because there is a lead).
When you go to a police brick and type in the corresponding number for "Reported Crimes", you will be met with a list of crimes listed in order of which has the most evidence or is the highest priority (murders > assaults > thefts, etc.). When you select a crime, a box pops up with all the information found about that crime. If you are a cop (not sure how it will recognize it with your "dynamic jobs" feature), there will be a selection where you can choose to add it to your jobs. This means you can then view the report while out on the case (you won't have to go back to the police station). The report is automatically updated if more clues are found. It will also tell you if the crime has been solved and it will give you an option to remove it from your jobs list. You can also have more than 1 case in your list of jobs.
If a police officer witness the crime, the criminal automatically becomes wanted. Same goes for if more than 2 people witness the crime. This would prevent mass-murders from going unnoticed if nobody decides to report it.
I never liked how jail time was limited to 6 ticks (or 1 hour). I think that it should be either increased or unlimited. This means that if you kill 27 people, you are in jail for much longer than an hour. I think this would make criminals think twice before deciding to commit a crime. I've seen City RPs turn into deathmatches; this would prevent it by adding more risk and punishments to committing crimes and putting criminals behind bars for longer amounts of time. It would also balance the heightened difficulty in witnessing/reporting/solving crimes because with less crimes it's only logical that they be harder to solve.
I have also been thinking about the idea of paying off witnesses. This bit could get a little unrealistic, but I still like the idea. Basically, the criminal would go to the police station (it's safe because the crime has yet to be reported; you're not wanted) and go to the police brick. If and only if there was a witness, a selection will be available called "Pay off witnesses". The criminal could put down however much money they want to keep the witness quiet. When the witness goes to the police station or calls 911 and they put in the information for the crime, they would be met with an additional selection before being able to report the crime. It would present them with an option to take the money and erase the report (gone permanently) or to continue with the report making the criminal wanted. The criminal would get his money back, but he will then be wanted for sure (because now the witness
knows who did it). This seems really complicated, but I still really like the idea.
All of this^ is meant to slow down the process of crime and law enforcement. In previous City RPs, crime is all over the place. If you have only 1 or 2 cops trying to control 5-6 criminals with OP weapons, the game turns into a survival deathmatch. With this sort of set up, crime is slowed down considerably; it is harder to acquire weapons, there is more risk in committing crimes, there is more strict punishments for crimes, reporting and arresting is slowed, etc.
- Crime
Crime comes with a penalty. You can't just go on a spree and expect only 6 ticks to pay for your crimes. In CityMod, your jail sentence doesn't work like that. For each demerit you have before your jailing, an extra amount of time is added to your sentence. Each time you are sent to jail, it increasingly becomes easier to get more time added /per demerit. When your jail sentence reaches a certain amount, you will be given a life sentence. If you get a life sentence, you might as well reset your account. |
I like this idea, but I think it should be limited. I think that it should take a good amount of being jailed to get a life sentence and only major crimes add on to the cumulative jail time total. This means that if you are jailed for pickpocketing or something minor like that, it doesn't add any additional time like a murder or assault would. Even then, I think that it should take like a total of 50 murders/assaults/major thefts to get a life sentence. I know that sounds unrealistic, but it makes sense for a game like this. If it were realistic, you could get a life sentence for killing 1 or 2 players. It's a high number, 50 counts, but I think it's still reasonable. I remember on YorkTown's City RP, I went on a 120-something kill-streak before finally being jailed (for 1 hour LOL). It's not too difficult to have those major crimes add up.
On a sort of unrelated note, I have never liked the concept of "wanting to go to jail". People would get 6 stars and purposely get jailed (or have their buddy jail them) so they could be sent to jail. Why? Because that's how they make their money. Most Jail RPs have the ability to mine or cut down trees while in jail. People would purposely get jailed for an hour so they could rack up tons of money through laboring. Instead of earning money through laboring, I think that it should maybe decrease their time in jail. It's kind of like having good behavior. If you are mining a rock, much like you can find a gemstone, you could receive a lowered jail time. It would say something like "Your jail time has been decreased by 5 minutes for good behavior". This would encourage laboring for a decreased jail time rather than for money. You wouldn't get yourself jailed so you could mine for a lower jail time. I also like this idea because of the people who get jailed and then go AFK. If you go AFK after being jailed, you throw out the chance of having your jail time decreased; instead you would have to serve the entire sentence.
This could also mean that you could have time
added to your jail time. This would happen if you assault or kill players who are also in jail. It would say something similar like "Your jail time has been increased by 8 minutes for bad behavior". This would discourage screwing around while in jail.
I also never liked how people could be in jail for 5 seconds. This was because of how jail time was given. Jail time was based on ticks. For example: 4 stars = 4 ticks in jail. You could be jailed for 1 tick and be let out in 5 seconds because the next tick would pass. I think it would be better if jail time was actually calculated intelligently. It would be by hours/minutes/seconds instead of by ticks. This means that if you're jailed, say, for murder, theft, and breaking and entering, you would receive a 44 minutes and 30 seconds (or something like that). Instead of it saying "You have been jailed for 4 ticks", it would say "You have been jailed for 44m 30s". I'm not sure if you're going to have a GUI, like Jasa's (which I think is a good idea), but you could check whenever you want to see how much time you have left in your sentence.
tl;dr:>Report crimes with pop-up window where you can select information with drop-down boxes
>Evidence can be added to a crime report after it's been filed
>You can add crime reports to your job list so you can refer to it when not at the police station
>Cases go cold if they have little information or if no evidence is added in a certain amount of time, cases with a lead take much more time to go cold
>The more respected a player is that you murder = the more you are wanted/more jail time
>If a police officer witnesses a crime the criminal automatically becomes wanted, no crime report needed
>If 3 or more players witness a crime the criminal automatically becomes wanted
>Jail times increased or unlimited, ex: you can get 4 hours in jail for a crime
>Criminals can pay off witnesses by going to the police brick and entering the amount of money they want to try to persuade the witness to keep quiet, the witness, when they go to the police brick, will be met with an option to take the money and let the crime be erased (permanently), or continue with the report making the criminal wanted
>Cumulative jail time, if you have been arrested for a major crime before, time will be added to the next crime you commit
>Eliminating the "wanting to go to jail" concept, people want to go to jail so they can labor for tons of emone, this would be stopped by making laboring benefit you in a different way: lowered jail time, if you labor, you have a random chance (like a gemstone) to have your jail time decreased, same goes for bad behavior: if you assault/kill someone else in jail you will have time added to your jail time
>Jail time is not based on ticks anymore, jail time is instead given by hours/minutes/seconds, this means you could be jailed on 2 counts of murder, 3 counts of assault, and 1 count of breaking and entering and receive 72 minutes and 45 seconds
