Author Topic: APUSH?  (Read 1229 times)

So I signed up for APUSH (AP United States History) but since I've heard scary things about it. The school I go to is pretty rigorous already. I might still be able to back out. My parents don't seem to mind but I'm trying to keep my education in mind. Do you think colleges would like straight A's with no AP classes, or a possible B or C in an AP course? I've never been good at history, or public speech, and this class seems to have a bit of public speech.

yes i am aware i'm asking a lego forum for advice

what are the scary things

Mostly the rigorousness of the work, a lot of reading, public speech, lots of essays.

I took it my Junior year of HS and had to do 3 essay questions for homework every night. Essay questions are basically a normal question like a short answer one you would see on a test, BUT you have to answer the question in a completely developed and detailed essay. It was the biggest pain in the ass class I've ever taken, but I learned a lot from it. I say stay in it. You'll learn about US History in much more detail and improve your work ethic at the same time.

The school is irrelevant. AP curriculum is standardized across the entire USA by Collegeboard.

It's an AP level class. You're going to have to do extra reading every night, write Free Response Question answers on every test (and maybe even more frequently), spend more time studying the details, and possibly study for the AP test. I see kids do it all the time. I wouldn't personally do that to myself (even though I am doing it this upcoming year with AP Gov/Econ) but if you want the weighted grade or the free pass from a college class, go for it.

i wanted to take it but there """""WASNT ANY ROOOM" in the class so i think im going to kill someone to take their place

i was in your position literally 11 months ago and i dropped from APUSH to regular because the teachers made it seem like a scary course.  then for the whole loving year i had all my friends who stayed in APUSH go on and loving on for three hours about how easy it is (but i ended up with like a 96% final grade for USH without studying once, not even for exams).

if you think you've got the stuff for it, go for it.  AP classes are a nice bump up.

Different classes have different ability requirements outside of being able to do work. Most literature-based classes will require you to have some public speaking and writing skills. If you don't feel like you're ready for it, try to switch out. Most teachers will understand.

considering it's standardized across america, and people are saying it wasn't hard, i figure i can probably do it fine.

It's not hard, but it's tons and tons of work.

For colleges, its better to have a B in an AP or Honors course than have no honors or ap classes at all.

All my classes are honors by default B-)

when it comes to classes "hard" just means you learn more
unless it's something stupid like art

I think that the colleges wouldn't really care much if you got A's in AP History or non-AP History. Many colleges these days look at the extracurricular activities you've done over your school-years.

as long as you don't mind oodles of homework and actually taking notes in class you're fine
it's not TERRIBLE at least
