Author Topic: How do I even Algebra?  (Read 3561 times)

since they're both negative the answer is going to positive, so you might as well get with of the "-" to make things less confusing

(5 2/13)/(4/39)

to make things even less confusing, convert the whole number into a fraction:

(5 2/13) = (5*13/13) = (65/13)
(65/13)+(2/13) = (67/13)
(67/13)/(4/39)

now to make the denominators equal to further simplify things:

(67/13)/(4/39)
13*3 = 39
67*3 = 201
(201/39)/(4/39)

the final answer is 50.25-- you should only have to use a calculator once/twice for this whole problem if you use one at all

Algebra is pointless anyway. You will never even need to use it in your life unless you are trying to become an engineer or architect. All you really need to learn in life is Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division.

It also helps to be Literate.
you also need to learn algebra to pass high school! you'll have to do it soon enough, kiddo!

I passed algebra 2 in 10th grade but I guess that's just because I'm good with math. it wasn't too hard to me.

I am so lucky to attend a private school, public school is really hard and bullying is a big issue.

Over where I live, I was supposed to be done with Algebra 2 in 10th grade had there not been a huge clusterforget that kicked off all this bullstuff.

lol that isn't even algebra

you aren't manipulating variables, so it is just straight up arithmetic

This part isn't algebra, it's some sort of ridiculous test that has like 100 questions that they want me to finish before I can even begin my courses. How loving gay is that? I'm going to have to guess through this stuff because I'm not sitting here for 10 hours trying to figure out a single problem that isn't familiar to me. No no, it's not until I finish this test until I get to move on to doing my Algebra course. :')

Obviously I'll have to pass it sooner or later. I honestly had no idea what happened to my brain because I used to be excellent with math. What happened to me? :(

dividing fractions is just multiplying by a reciprocal (multiplicative inverse, e.g. reciprocal of 2 is 1/2)

-5 and 2/13 is -67/13, which you multiply by -39/4, straight across as (-67*-39)/(13*4) = 2613/52, simplifying to 201/4

you don't even need a calculator, I think Zloff overcomplicated stuff but the answer is the same

also I'm slow as forget and it's been answered multiple times but I was bored.

I did a bunch of extra steps and repeated/clarified things so he could understand it better ://////

Both of you sound correct. I just don't understand why they wanted the answer in a fraction rather than a decimal. :s

That's generally not something you have to understand, half the time they're checking to see if you're reading the directions properly.

Because fractions are easier to deal with. And are more accurate.

2/13 = 0.1538.... and so on.

In math you'd just take the first 2 or 4 decimal points and round up or down. That's less accurate than the fraction 2/13 because that has the full decimal and has no rounding done to it.

I just guessed the entire assessment. They'll just have to realize that I can't do Algebra. lol

tsk tsk tsk.
If you don't try to get the right answer, you'll never be able to do Algebra. You could've tried, but instead you guessed and now may not even pass Algebra this year. That would be terrible.

Good luck with later life if you can't manage to deal with fractions. They are all around you.

Oh no, it was probably an initial assessment to determine how bad I am at math. Hopefully they'll realize I'm terrible and might actually try to help me. The assessment had nothing to do with the actual class, though.
