What would happen? Most vital communication networks would be down and many people would be left in the dark. Most major cities would be destroyed completely obliterating everything within radius of the blast. Any Silos and subs that still have communication with the government would fire there missiles. Anyone not caught in the blast would be left in the dark, local police and nation guard would be out of communication or morale would be low and there would be men deserting there posts most likely. Soon after radioactive fallout will come down irradiating ground water and contaminating crops. Those lucky enough to get to bomb or fallout shelter may find themselves trapped in there for months waiting for the radiation levels to drop to a safe enough level. Those fortunate enough avoid the bombs and fallout would probably resort to anarchy or forming groups to survive. Should the government survive, military forces will deploy from underground bunkers that haven't been effected by an emp to lay down law and order on the surface. Anyone caught within the blast radius who survived will have to evac immediately and mostly die of cancer. If we lucky in such a scenario we could rebuild with our surviving government, worst case scenario the anarchists have a wet dream and everyone is basically a raider and everything is contaminated or unusable.

I think the luckiest people in this situation would be the ones immediately killed by the bombs. I would not want to live in a post MAD world. But in reality no country with nuclear weapons would use them. They know if they use one they've just killed themselves.

That would probably spark global nuclear war, which if unchecked would result in the death of 99% of all life on earth and potentially earth itself. The thing is, no country in their right mind would ever entertain the idea of nuking any country, least of all the US. These days, if a country is under attack from nuclear weapons, they will retaliate with their own nuclear weapons.

We probably would detect it before it hit
imagine a million people clogging the bridges and tunnels out of new york city
nobody would get out in time

the us and allies could shoot down thousands of nukes at once. our missile shielf is superior.

but ironically, even if we thwart our own nuclear destruction, we would still react by shooting our own.
so the world kinda loses either way lol
