Author Topic: forced to switch to windows or else i can't play with my friends ever  (Read 4401 times)

So my 2 best friends play this stupid windows game called atWar. I swear, it's all they ever play. Pretty much this entire year we've all been scavenging for a game we can all play, and they both decided on atWar, a game that requires Microsoft Silverlight to play. Microsoft Silverlight is only distributed to Windows. First of all, i'm not on Windows, im on Linux, and i'm NEVER switching back to Windows for various reasons.

Of course, I googled a solution for this, there's this mod called Pipelight that's kind of like Wine. It's a replacement for Microsoft Silverlight for linux. I tried installing it several different ways but the installer didn't work, the ppa's broken, I seriously don't know right now.

Catzoo: ?
Catzoo: it doesn't work?
arukemo: ugh..
arukemo: no..
arukemo: idfk what to do now
Catzoo: switch to windows
arukemo: ugh
arukemo: not this again
Catzoo: fine if you don't want to me and ice will just play without you on AtWar
arukemo: god damnit
arukemo: im being forced to switch to an OS that i hate

Idfk what they like about Atwar. I'm pretty sure there are lots more online strategy games that aren't as bloated as that one.
what should i do?

use virtualbox or whatever to emulate windows, dummy

whats wrong with windows

I've used Linux for a long time, and I've come to like it.
Back late when I was using Windows, I noticed how slow it was going. Everytime I play Blockland on Windows it would always crash about half an hour later.

And it's just vice-versa on Linux. I receive no crashes. The games I have on steam are limited but they still run faster than they ever did on Windows.

And one time, I was watching anime on youtube, and it just blatantly crashed later. All I had were Steam and Google Chrome open. Is that really so resource-heavy?

so basically because your computer is crap

I know that game. I signed up in 2011 when it wasn't known and when it was called Afterwind. I remember when there were only roughly 25k-30k players.

hmm, well ok
i guess if you are used to it then there's no problem
just maybe some compatibility issues with some games, but far from all

i mean ive used windows my whole life so im used to it. i tried out kubuntu and i hated it, but thats just my opinion
but those crashes seem more of a hardware problem than windows - i never really crash

i thought you were all about linux. i dont even know you anymore

That doesn't happen with 99% of all decent computers on windows
Unless you have like 1mb of ram or a load of viruses, I don't see why either of those things would happen

Anyways, I have similar experiences with friends. Moved from FL and my friends never play anything but LoL, and I just don't like the game. And where I live now everyone is either a hill billy farmer with little to know computer/game knowledge or interest, or they do nothing I enjoy :/

if you call it being forced then they're not really ur friends

ever heard of dual booting????????

so your only problem is that you don't like windows. just suck up and use it. it doesn't have to be your main; you can use it for games only. nbd.

virtual machine dual boot is your answer, you can keep whatever distro you're using as your main OS and run Windows when you need it.

And why can't you use Wine?

To sum up everything that people said before me:

1. None of your Windows problems happen if your computer isn't from the 80s
2. Dualboot, virtualbox
3. He's not your friend if he's forcing you to do anything.

Also, here's my opinion: atWar seems to be a stuffty game, so force your friends to play Blockland or TF2 or any other game that's actually good and Linux compatible. Why are you being the bottom and letting your friends be the top? Don't be submissive, be the top. If you prefer being the bottom, at least be the power bottom.
