Author Topic: Just blew an audition, great.  (Read 2218 times)

So, I was trying out for Tri-M Honors Music Society at my high school. I was playing Now's The Time on my saxophone in front of a small group, including some friends of mine. Well, I did a pretty bad job with the song. I messed up on a couple of spots in a big way, even in spots I have never screwed up before. And I was so nervous for no reason, like my body was shaking all over even though I knew I could do it and I was calm. The judges said nothing until I asked them for any comments and the band director criticized me in a constructive way, but no one said anything to me. Every one else was praising each other but no one said anything about me, even though I told them they did a great job.

I'm pretty disappointed with myself right now and I embarrassed myself. Any advice?

get better at saxophoning

you blew an audition, so what?

If playing saxophone is something you enjoy, just practice more and work on your ability to play under pressure, have friends/family watch you play before doing anything in front of judges, etc

It's just, I feel like I embarassed myself in front of some of my friends. I've been playing for a long time now and I have been practicing Now's The Time for a solid 2 years. 2 years, and I forgeted it all up in this audition. I'm just worried I won't get into Tri-M. I don't know.

i'd love to play the sax, the sound is amazing

Yeah it's a fun instrument. I've been playing for 5 years now, and I love it.

if they're really your friends, they won't really care how you did.  I'm awful with live auditions too, I play Annoying Orangeet and my tone gets really bad, you can hear all of the air going through, the only way to get past it really is to get someone to listen.  Play louder/more confidently during rehearsals, try to get more solos.

Is there something stopping you from trying again next time? Just practice more and eventually you'll get it right. Also you're nervous because you may have stage fright. Try practicing in front of fake people first.
