"Demos" option in main menu?

I found this image and on v8 menu videos.

What did this weird option do? Would this be a built in screen recorder for BL, Similar to GMOD?
This would've been handy for people that are poor and don't own/can't install FRAPS.
Even though I do have FRAPS, this would have been handy.
Would someone explain what this did?
I didn't know where to place this, so it's in Suggestions and Requests.

Recording a demo would break the sun direction, and i recall something about the playback being buggy or something

I remember demos in rtb
they used to show a 'demo' of what you seen while recording, players, bricks and all, it was removed because it was extremely buggy

I have never played in a version earlier than 16. So for me it was also a surprise discovery. It would be nice to return this if it was used for its intended purpose, as you said.

Yeah, it was used to record and play back. I believe there are still functions for it, but I don't know if they work.
I do remember that everyone said that they didn't work at all, but I had used them multiple times and they worked fine.

The functions still exist (for whatever reason), but they don't do anything.
