I still don't see the appeal. What's fun about driving through mud?

idk its just fun for some reason. having a car that can haul ass through rough terrain.
id personally never do it because id like my car to be intact but i guess some people love to have buffy and rough cars

I'm an asphalt kind of person.

I've never had an inkling of a desire to ever take my car off solid road, and I can't imagine much benefit to doing so.
but...
Speaking of old/trashed cars, I kind of want to buy an old Evo or STI and turn it into a rally car.

but...

He's referring to his Z. I wouldn't take it off road either.

but his entire point is that he doesn't understand why you would want to take a car off-road, isn't it?

I don't consider rally racing off roading. You're not driving through mud or over dunes or anything, it's like street racing just on dirt or snowy terrain. It's like low traction street racing.

rally cars get about the same amount of mud on them that a off-road truck would lol

also they jump lol

If the terrain is wet they do. And the goal of rally racing isn't to jump-- it's actually kind of a bad thing that you try to balance out with speed to get the smallest jump and fastest time. I'm not interested in off road rally racing anyway, I like paved rally racing.
