Banging your fists on somebody's car as part of a mob of 100+ people is an intimidation tactic. It's SUPPOSED to scare the victim, and I guarantee if it happened to you you'd loving stuff yourself. There's absolutely no reason why any human or animal on the planet wouldn't feel like their life was in danger.

there's a loving reason we don't live by an eye for an eye anymore, people overestimate what an eye is and end up just killing the person. It's not up to you to take action, it's up to the authorities, and if you've done nothing wrong, you'll be fine and your aggressor will go to jail.
In a dystopian world where authorities are constantly over our shoulders and have near-omnipotence, I would agree with you. But in the real world, you're probably going to be dead or severely beaten before the cops show up. Unless you defend yourself, or run like this guy did.

It takes at least 10 minutes for police to arrive on the scene. Nothing short of a tank will keep you safe from 100 rowdy people for 10 minutes.
