There is now a way to fight cancer without donating money, or anything like that.
Introducing: Folding@Home
When you download this, you run a program that uses your unused computer power
to help scientists know how proteins fold. If you don't believe this/want to understand more
on how it works, go here:
http://folding.stanford.edu/home/ (there's a video there you should see)
If you really think about doing this, look for the "Start Folding" button, and it will give you a download
to set it up.
Steps:
After you download the setup, run it. It is 100% safe!
Then, there should be a colorful bubble looking thing at the bottom right of your screen. If it's not there, it's probably
in the hidden icons. If not, then look for the 'colorful bubble' in your desktop, and double-click it to run it. THEN it will
for sure be there at the bottom right of the screen.
When you see it there, right click it, and click "Advanced Control"
Once you do that, two windows will open. The first one will be information on how your folding process
is doing, and the other will be asking if you want to fold anonymously, or you want to configure something.
Click the one where you get to configure, and then make sure you're on the "Identity" tab.
For the name, enter:
winstonroxie1For the team number, enter:
143016Do not enter anything for the password.
If you look through it a little more, you will discover that you could speed it up or even slow it down.
Speeding it up will probably take more computer power, and MIGHT cause a little lag. I set it to full,
and my computer's fine. Also, if you use laptops, you could set it to where it stops folding while you charge it.
You'll find options like this.
How to know you completed a session:
There will be a green bar whenever you open the "Advanced Controls" and whenever it goes to 100%
you have completed a session, and then an amount of points is added.
To check how many points we have:
Go to
http://fah-web2.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userpage&username=winstonroxie1and look for "Total Score"
To see the other users, look here:
http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userstatsI want us to make it onto that list! (even though it seems pretty impossible)
Remember to run it every day, if you really want to help prevent cancer. I even run it in my sleep!
Anyways, thank you guys, and if you have any questions, post a reply.
