Can't run HL2 mods?

I'm trying to run a hl2 mod, it's called missinginfo I think; but for some reason every time I start up the game, it has a white screen, makes some noises, and opens up an error that says "Can't find background image materials/console/startup_loading.vtf". I tried it with another mod and it did the same thing. I put the mod files in a folder called sourcemods under steamapps (I was told to do this in the installation guide). Am I doing anything wrong?

another question, is "SDK Source" a base like the 2007 and 2006 version?

actually, nevermind about the mod i'm running low on disk space anyway and the sdk stuff is bringing it down to 200~ mb
