What about specialized zone bricks?  The zone brick color would show up on the map as whatever color.  Or these could be modified baseplate bricks.

Good idea. You could plant zone bricks and name them MapZone or something, and that color will show up.

i recommend that you add an option to use a predefined image, perhaps downloaded from the server. a building's roof could have the same color as the ground and thus being "cloaked" on that map.

a predefined image could use only the grays and water blue (and even point out some landmarks) to match the gta style.
