Windows 8.1 start menu doesn't function like the start menu everyone knows and loves

This is exactly what I mean. Sticking to what "you know and love" Isn't always the best option. just because Microsoft is trying to go for a new, more efficient interface and internal working of the OS doesn't mean you have to bitch and hate on the entire corporation for making something which takes 0.6 seconds longer to get to the main screen and removed a start button.

Who uses the start button that much to care about it anyway, you have taskbar and desktop icons

I really love win8 on my surface pro <3

A majority of the people don't like it, people wanted the start button back, Microsoft listened and brought it back. Instead they didn't bring the one that everyone wanted back. If you complicate things and don't give in to the demands correctly you are just going to get more negative feedback.

It's too late for windows 8. The UI designers failed and the bandwagon has already done it's damage. These stats reflect that.

yes, it's sad but true.

we will have to wait for windows 9 (hopefully they dont call it that)

get debian linux lol
i hear they're adding support for windows executables soon
Wine

I just got a laptop a few weeks ago, I downloaded a windows 7 start menu right away and I sometimes forget I have windows 8.

bandwagon

Not at all, the UI is a very good reason to hate an OS. They tried to pull some futuristic 'touch of the future' stuff with the crowd and it didn't work, surprise surprise. Windows 8 was also proven to be a bit under Windows 7 by performance, not by a whole lot or even significant amount but it still goes to show. The only reason I like it is because it has awesome driver support, it instantly install your drivers automatically without needing some stuffty DVD with drivers. I got a start button program and completely disabled the metro app system and all the other unnecessary crap.

And yes change is a problem, especially all this time we've been used to the original Windows form that is Windows 7. Windows XP had the same form, Windows Vista too, same with 98 and 95 and all the other version in between. It is a huge problem, you expect people to just change their knowledge about something they used for several years at a snap of a finger? If it wasn't for this start-is-back program or some other ones that add a start button, Windows 8 would be absolute garbage for me and most people.
