Author Topic: Trading Ubisoft Game Code (Far Cry 3) for Steam Stuff.  (Read 2191 times)

I'm not.  With software so ubiquitous and even required to use a computer, why shouldn't the cost of entry be as low as possible?  Your browser is free, your media player is free, Steam is free, why isn't your operating system?
do you really think that developing a browser or even steam is near the same level of difficulty as developing a whole new operating system?
there are literally tens of thousand of engineers working on windows, what, you want them to all be unpaid?

Because microsoft has a sizeable grasp of the OS market, a very recognizable brand, and people are willing to pay money so MS charges. However, that says nothing about the quality of the product. I love my $100 copy of windows 7 64bit, guaranteed compatibility with any programs I could ever want, ease of use, driver support, etc. I installed a ubuntu partition on my drive to get the linux promo for TF2, it was extremely slow and laggy. I had to install 50+ packages for steam compatibility alone.

ON THE SUBJECT OF WINDOWS8/8.1:
It's a trainwreck, of microsoft's own design. I don't think it's indicative of windows in general. I don't know why MS would make a new OS that takes away some major UI that most people like for a tile interface and breaks a little compatibility, then release a service pack that adds the same UI back from 7 that also breaks more compatibility

"Literally tens of thousands of engineers working on windows" lol, are you kidding?  More like 1,000 or so, working on every component, including media player and internet explorer as well as the kernel (this includes graphics such as icons, and making translations).  And they would go unpaid?  Then how do they make Linux right now?

(from http://royal.pingdom.com/2012/04/16/linux-kernel-development-numbers/)
That's a LOT of companies working together (including microsoft) for the free kernel.

It's not the same scale as VLC or Chrome, but it's the same idea, and it clearly works, just as it has for over two decades.

someone hasnt used windows 8...
It's the same loving thing as windows 7, but faster. It has desktop and no compatibility issues whatsoever. The tile thing is a new concept and it works. Mobile apps and stuff with a huge speed boost? You would have to be a poorcigarette or a moron to not want it

i dont have much but i dont see why not.
