        The Touhou Project (東方Project) is a series of 2D vertically-scrolling danmaku, or "bullet hell", shooting games developed Team Shanghai Alice, who's sole member is ZUN. The series is known for its incredibly large cast of memorable characters, gorgeous BGM, beautiful bullet patterns engaging storylines, and devoted fanbase.

        To date there are fourteen main series games and seven official spin-off titles. The first five main series games are for the NEC PC-98 family of Japanese computers and are not considered canon with the Windows installments.

While I've never played any of the Touhou games, from what I see it's pretty infamous in other Danmaku communities due to how...I dunno, overblown it is and its apparent lack of difficulty compared to other Danmaku (again, from what I see, not from what I've played).

Looking up fan art on any -booru site for anything at all will most likely yield a Touhou crossover at some point.

I do like Flandre's theme because of the RAN-RAN-RU remix.

only problem i have with the touhou fandom is that 99% of the players are stuff at the games and hate playing them but they love cute anime lolicons. the fan games are better than the official games by a freaking mile anyways. super marisa world, patchcon, anything by aquastyle, and megamari are a lot funner than anything in the official team has put out

Touhou is definitely one of the easier danmaku franchises, but I like them because they're not just hard for the sake of being hard; you expend effort to learn how to clear bosses so the experience feels special and hard-won, listening to the BGM in it's original setting and confronting the characters you've learned about. They're not horribly frustrating like other danmaku so that you always think that if you could concentrate a little harder you can push through.

at 143 themes it's not even scratching the surface but it has a good portion of the most well known tunes in the most well-done piano arrangement I've found
