not really, maybe occasionally
Nope.

lemme pose this question, and I'll put this in the OP when it gets updated:
I have certifications with industrial-grade software (photoshop, illustrator, etc, aka adobe products)
I'm an eagle scout
I've got more service hours to my community than I can try to keep track of.

Would that already not be a substantial ammount compared to your average college grad that just waves a sheet of paper titled 'diploma' in your face?

that stuff helps you get into colleges. but it doesn't equal a degree.
without a degree that stuff puts you above a high school grad though.

College is based of YOU personally.  It isn't something you want to machine off of and just go thinking it will carry you to success in life.  I used to be against going to college from when I was in high school until I was 19.  I am about 36 units away from obtaining a Business Administration major with a minor in Economics and will use this to get a job at Boeing within the next three years.  It will triple my salary NOT including potential advancements in the future.  My education will only cost me around $12,500 out of my own pocket without taking government loans/grants.  If you plan on going, really map things out.  It isn't too hard and all the people who say it is a waste of time just don't have the level of commitment to work towards something.  It is true, it isn't always worth it for certain people, however if you do it right you can open more doors in your life.

it was never a question for me really, though not even being a junior in high school i don't really need to decide much about college just yet

i don't have a good grasp on what college is and what it does for a person other than it being an extra number of years of education that you can take to boost opportunities for jobs/money-earning stuff later in life. if anyone knows of a good video or website that would help describe it to me that would be much appreciated, otherwise i'll just let life explain itself on its own.

can you not learn a trade yourself? Become an apprentice, self-study, some colleges offer online courses, use the infinite knowledge of the internet?
No you can't.
Well, you can, but you aren't going to get any work from it.
If you teach yourself a trade, you could become the best in the world at it but you still wont get a job because you don't have a certified piece of paper saying that you can do that trade.
People don't care about your skills, they care about being told that you have skills.

Lol you're kidding right
I'm certified in the same exact software my mom uses for her work and I create the same stuff she does. College didn't teach me that, I did that in highschool, as something extra cause it was free for me.
My mom didn't get that from college, Adobe didn't EXHIST when she was in college.
Hell, my mom's degree is in art, she works in a communications job.
Her degree has little to no effect on her job.

A college degree is not impressive nowadays, because look at how many of you want one. You will all be identical. The only difference will be what part-time job you worked to pay for college.

YOU have to show the world "I'm a blacksmith and I can make an awesome looking sword," then you PROVE it. A college diploma does not show that you are worthy of a job. Just that you studied how to do that job

certifications expire. and anyone can get them. 50 bucks and 1 hour test online can earn one for anyone who wants.
they dont even come close to a degree.

That's not what I'm talking about at all.
I'm saying, for example, you are an excellent boiler maker, you can weld and everything better than a pro, but without any certification, no matter how good you are you wont get employed for it because the company doesn't give a stuff if you don't have the paper to back it up.

This is exactly what he doesn't get. Certifications aren't what soley get you the job. They help but you normally you need some sort of degree.

I think Adin is just trying to justify why he doesn't need school and tell everyone else they don't. He was never look for input.

I think he is willfully not understanding this.

I know a lot of manufacturing jobs that pay 75k a year and have full benefits and on the job training.

And how easy are they to get? I'm almost positive these jobs require something more than just a high school diploma to get.

If you go through college, a company is going to employ you over 200 non-college applicants.

do you not know of how college works? have you yet to find out about the hidden SECRETS behind the institution? it's just a big scam. colleges pay companies to only hire people with degrees, making it so students are forced to invest a bunch of money into an education that doesn't come close to what you spend on it. all colleges are owned by maybe 2 or 3 large corporations, but they are each labeled differently so you think you get a better deal at some. in the end, the money goes to the same people. it's a genius scam

My brother has been hired in over ten of them. He doesn't have a diploma. From his work experience it makes him just as skilled as someone with a bachelors or masters. Right now his current job pays 12.50 an hour and he works everyday for 8 hours.

Wait, normally I can tell sarcasm but I don't know if you're serious or not. Because if you're serious than you might be handicapped.

That doesn't sound like a 75k salary + benefits job.
