Author Topic: nintendo suspends/terminates spotpass feature of swapnote  (Read 1361 times)

apparently users (including minors) are exchanging "offensive material" on swapnote and nintendo decided that the best way to stop it is by shutting the spotpass feature down

Nope, not at all. I still am waiting on my 3DS.

Nintendo has been investigating ways of preventing this and determined it is best to stop the SpotPass feature of Swapnote because it allows direct exchange of photos and was actively misused."
So they're getting rid of the SpotPass feature.

Swapnote was a nice visual way of recieving updates about games. Nikki was the software's mascot. I don't think it's the biggest upset ever but surely popping open a 3D photo of someones snake isn't nice, although the most obvious way to solve this is to just remove the photo feature for the streetpass notes, as opposed to terminating a long running function. I would have preferred a pictochat though without streetpass features. That way Nintendo wouldn't really care as much because it's more of a direct choice to recieve it from a person than an indirect.

now i'm confused, I can't tell whether they shut down it entirely or just the spotpass feature

So they're getting rid of the SpotPass feature.
Do you know what the spotpass feature is? It's the internet part of the software. It's what swapnote was meant to be used for, and it's the only reason anyone used it. :c

Edit: the software itself still works, but the spotpass is gone. Which means you can't send or receive notes over the internet

I'm pretty sure you could still use the Streetpass feature

You're right, you can. But the streetpass feature is pretty much useless

I would think street pass would be the one they would shut down?
That's the one that communicates with people you walk near right?

Yes, but it only works with people you have added on your friends list. So you can't get a stranger's note

The exact same thing applies to the spotpass though.
