Can't hear anyone from my Xbox Mic

I have the xbox mic that comes with the xbox. I can't hear anyone or anything. Any ideas on what to do?
(I've done simple things like un-plugging, changing volume, resetting my Xbox. I also tried deleting and installing my profile again.)

How long have you had it, and what level of care would you say you give it?
Cheap xbox mics are unfortunately very, very, fragile and I've been through probably 20 in my career of xbox live.
