Author Topic: Biggest Sandbox Games?  (Read 5841 times)

Well I wan'ted to check out some 3D Sandbox games and I thought it would be cool to
hear from you guys.

One of the BIGGEST Sandbox maps I ever saw was in Just Cause 2, The Panau Island.

http://justcause.wikia.com/wiki/Panau

It is "Stretching out 1035.55 km2 (400 square miles)," and has a various amount of Airports and cool places to explore. If you destroy Military Property it can get you Chaos points
which get you closer to unlocking a new mission or- Black Market Item.
The Black Market controlled by Tom Sheldon supposavly "Sloth Demon" and
"White Tiger". The Sloth Demon is Sheldon's fake name for the Black Market Dealer.

Including this weird island which where if you fly anything over it, you will be shot down with a creepy tower that shoots out lightning. I was thinking it was Panau's super weapon. Since I never finished the whole game.

A single Minecraft world is 7 times larger than the earth's surface.

oh, I thought it was infinite. for shame

It is. Thats just how far you can get before the game crashes.

daggerfall hosts a game world 2x the size of great britain (but its all randomly generated) along with 600k npcs, several thousands of towns, dungeons, cemetaries (2$p0ky4m), and so on. games a bit of a drag tho, 2 much freedom, repetitive gameplay, but the ambience is nice

i've heard that its slightly larger than the SA of neptune

Blockland has infinite land

Blockland has infinite land
you can only go so far before crashing / bugging everything out to a standstill

The scaled size of simulations isn't a particularly useful metric to compare them with. The Kerbol System in KSP is 0.76 astral units. Lots of sandbox space games span multiple star systems. One of the included sims in Universe Sandbox spans 70 galaxies.

Just Cause 2 has the largest open world maps that aren't randomly generated to date.

Also Spore's spaceship stage has an entire galaxy in it.

The more important question: what can you do with all that land?

all these open world action or rpg games isnt what i would consider sandbox...

in fact i havnt seen a single sandbox game even mentioned in this topic yet. besides blockland.
but having stuffloads of space isnt necessary, it dosnt really make it better.

This isn't actually true.
If you use the game's meters it's almost the size of Britain, but not quite.

KSP is sandbox.
