Of course if I'm going to enter a house I'm sure as hell not going to enter yours if your first response is to try and kill me. That'd be a jerk thing to do.

Also I'd pick a pump action shotgun. Despite the need of ammunition, shotgun shells are extremely common and easy to procure. Plus I already own one and its readily available to me with several boxes of ammunition.

Its all about lethality in range. With the change in weapons technology and common "know how", swords and spears are obsolete in human vs human situations. Hunting is as far as its uses are concerned and even then it barely can be considered practical.

Todays wars are won with bullets or lethal projectiles that travel at high speeds. The very reason the bow is still practical even though it is NOT a gunpowder weapon.

I don't believe in the whole one item is all you need mentality, but rather what is the smallest survival tool kit that you could come up with.
In this case:

Life Straw - You need clean water to survive, so you need a filter of some sort
Knife - Cuts, cleans meat, cut stuff
First Aide kit - If you are expecting rescue within a few days or need to treat wounds immediately without the risk of infection you will need this
kerosene - start fires to stay worm

any addition supplies would be on the form of can food, MRE's, and Bottle water, if you can afford it buy a gun of sort to scare off looters while you wait for rescuers to arrive.
