Author Topic: How do I port forward in garrys mod  (Read 1131 times)

I tried multiple different ports but it isn't working. I have a linksys e1000 router and I've tried a whole bunch of other ports but this stuff isn't working. Any suggestions?

its not about the port you use, its about what device you tell your router you want that port to work for.

step 2 man! step 2!

right click yer network and go to status

the IP4 number is your computer's identification for using that router. every device that ever connects is gonna have a slightly different number.

when port forwarding, you use that number (or the last 3 digits as the rest should be there already) to designate what device uses that port.

this comp was given the number 103. so all ports for things i need to play from this comp, need to be forwarded to .103

I already did that. It still isn't working. Is there some sort of number that you have to put at the end of the IP before you connect like in minecraft?

port forwarding is done the same way for every program/game

but if you are trying different ports. you have to make sure the one being forwarded is the same one as the settings on the program/game have. (many people still think that the name you give a port in the router settings really mean anything)
you can usually change them in some config file somewhere. or its best to just use the one they usually use and ask for by default.

on a related note, would anyone happen to know why the last three digits of an IPv4 would change periodically? is there a way to prevent it from happening so you wouldn't need to keep porting forward?

You can use something called static IP addresses. Don't confuse it for static IP addresses with your ISP, however.

Check on how your router does static IP addresses in the LAN.

mine kinda does that every 6 months or so when i get a new IP and the router decides to crap up. and i need to reset the power on both the modem and the router.
sometimes it kinda resets the devices x.x and i need to readjust them all.

dunno if thats a common thing or not. but ive dealt with it.

Has happened to me before. It's a pain. :/

The IP changes because most routers have a dynamic IP by default, which means it changes periodically. If you change to a static IP it won't change.

Also to OP, make sure you are forwarding the right ports.

Every web search is different on what ports I should use for GMod.

use the ports that your game wants.
there must be a config file somewhere in the users/garrys mod folder that would have it as a setting.

27015 is default for all source games
But you can change it to whatever you want in the server settings

Is canyouseeme.org a good place to check if your ports are open because its still saying that its not working.
